Tried and True? Or Try Something New?

Change is in the air.There is a great deal of advice on the subject of change. Just Google “quotes on change” and you’ll find some good stuff and piles of blather as well. Let me Google That For You
Looking at our industry, we see technological changes happening, frequently. But we also see “pockets of resistance”, not necessarily because of disinterest in the technological advances, but more because of the comfort of the tried and true, with regards to both technology and business relationships.There is high value in practicing what you know well. Clients invest time and money with the expectation that the solution in which they are investing will work the way it’s supposed to. The safest option is what you know to have worked for you over many years and many projects.But is it the best option? What really is your obligation to the client? Isn’t it to deliver the very best solution they can afford?

Part of the problem of course is the whole issue of convincing the client that there is a better solution.  One thing is for sure – if you’re not convinced that you have a better solution, you will not convince the client either.

So what has to happen? First, you have be willing to explore things outside of your tried and true experiences to find the truly best solution. This includes being confident enough to ask provocative questions of your clients, questions that you may not be completely comfortable asking, but questions they just may thank you for asking.

The second thing is to make sure you have the tools to convince yourself that the solution you are designing is the right one.
